According to reports appearing in the press the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) would dispatch a petition to the United Nations requesting for a probe by the world body into the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. No doubt it was a very sad incident and in her death the country has lost a political leader who had mass following in the public. But political matters are not solved by emotions only. We have to be patient and realistic. To have contact with international figures does not give any person or party the right to call for international help in national matters.
The United Nations can be approached only when another country is involved as in the case of the murder of the former Prime Minister of Lebanon Mr. Rafik Hariri where Syria was directly accused. Asif Ali Zardari, the spouse of the former Prime Minister has said that the UN can interfere because Al-Qaeda has been accused who are present in several countries. I think this assumption does not hold water because Al-Qaeda does not have a government and country.

“All leaders are under threat”. This view was expressed by the interior ministry spokesman Brig. (retd.) Jawed Iqbal Cheema in his weekly press briefing. So as precautionary measures security advisory has been issued to all politicians indiscriminately. It is of no consequence what he had said earlier or what he is talking now. The purpose is to warn the political leaders and make them aware of the danger.
When the election is so close political leaders cannot avoid making contact with the masses. To appeal to vote for their parties they will have to approach voters. Sometimes especially in mobs it becomes difficult to keep security measures intact. Lapses occur and mishaps take place.
At a time when several attacks have taken place on the life of the president himself it will be wise for the leaders to facilitate the security measures taken by the government agencies. Terrorists have no friends and belong to no party. Their prime aim is to destroy peace and create a reign of terror. The political leadership must cooperate with the government in order to bring peace to the country.
