Pervez Musharraf planning exit
Filed Under MQM, PML, PPP, Pakistan | Leave a Comment
According to a report published in the Telegraph Pervez Musharraf is considering stepping down as the election results went against his expectations and the people of the country voted for the opposition parties.
I am not a supporter of military rule and want democracy to flourish in the country but in my opinion Pervez Musharraf has been the best ruler in the entire history of Pakistan.
Pervez Musharraf came to power when he dismissed the Nawaz Sharif government. The coup was widely welcomed by the people of the country and Mr. Musharraf was at the height of popularity in his initial three years. This was the time when he kept the politicians at bay and governed the country directly.
The Nawaz government which he dismissed was widely regarded as corrupt and inefficient. It was during the Nawaz government that his accountability chief Saifur Rehman registered numerous cases against Benazir Bhutto and her husband Asif Ali Zardari.
Pervez Musharraf is being accused of maligning the judiciary but it was during the Nawaz Sharif government that the Supreme Court was attacked by the leaders and thugs of the PML(N).
It was during the Nawaz Sharif government that military was sent to civilian institutions in large number. Chief examples are the Water and Power Development Authority and the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation.
Pervez Musharraf is being accused of making the parliament a rubber stamp. When Nawaz Sharif was the prime minister of the country even constitutional amendments were done in few minutes.
Pervez Musharraf is accused of suppressing the press freedom but it was during the Sharif government that newsprint quota of an Urdu newspaper Jung was denied.
Pervez Musharraf is also accused of a role in the missing person case which was being investigated by the Supreme Court. It was during the Sharif government that a large number of people was killed in Karachi in both Sharif and Benazir governments. Several persons went missing whose whereabouts have not been traced as yet.
I think that Mr. Pervez Musharraf should step down and hand over the power to the so called leaders of the people. The people of the country have spoken very loudly that they do not need an honest man.

West’s deliberate provocation of Islam
Filed Under Pakistan | Leave a Comment
It now appears that the western nations are deliberately provoking the Muslim World by publishing sketches of the Holy Prophet(Peace be upon him). A Danish newspaper has once again published various sketches of the prophet. A controversy is also going on regarding the publication of images of the Prophet by Wikipedia.
All this is being done in the name of freedom of expression. Does freedom of expression means that there should be no regard for the sentiment of over a billion people in the world? Is it necessary to hurt the feelings of the Muslims by publishing such sketches regularly?
The Government of Pakistan has asked all ISPs to block the youtube website after the fresh controversy.
I think that it is high time for the Muslims to realize that they do not count for much in the world matters. It is extremely unfortunate that no Muslim country has taken any solid stance over this issue.
The solution of the problem does not lie in taking out long procession or strike in ones own country. The solution lies in self assessment. Why are we so weak that we cannot do anything to end this once and for all.

Conservatives have questioned the loyalty of Senator Barack Obama. Barack Obama’s refusal to wear an American flag lapel pin has earned him the ire of conservatives who say that the Senator lacks patriotism.
Earlier her wife was also criticized for her remarks when she had said that she was proud of her country for the first time in her adult life.
I think it is unfortunate to question ones loyalty over such trivial issues. This is nothing but a smear campaign against the Senator based on misleading information that he is a Muslim and that he will destroy America.
The criticism should be directed against the policy issues and past record and not upon loyalty of a candidate. A candidate should be judged upon his ability, his experience and his commitment. If Barack Obama’s patriotism is questioned it has the potential to create division and resentment.

Hillary Clinton denounces Obama
Democratic Presidential hopeful Senator Hillary Clinton has denounced her rival Senator Barack Obama who is also aspiring for the Democratic nomination.
She strongly criticized Obama of producing a misleading leaflet over her healthcare policy.
Hillary Clinton has been defeated by Barack Obama for the eleven consecutive time and the Senator from the New York must win the primaries being held on 4th March in Texas and Ohio.
I think that Hillary Clinton is making a desperate attempt to salvage her campaign. She should have avoided this bellicose tone. It would only have negative impact on her chances to win the white house race. The Senator must realize that Barack Obama is riding a crest wave of popularity which evident by large meetings and support among the people.

Benazir Bhutto killed by head injury
Filed Under PPP, Pakistan | Leave a Comment
The Scotland Yard team investigating the murder of Benazir Bhutto has concluded that she had died as a result of a head injury which was caused by the impact of the explosion. The report says that she was not killed by a bullet injury. The report says that she was killed by one assassin as against the speculations that she was attacked by more than one person.
Whatever the cause of the injury which resulted in her death, the fact remains that she was killed as a result of an attack. The Scotland Yard report remains inconclusive as they have not made any headway towards detecting the real people behind the plot. It is clear that the assassin was not acting on his own.
It is unfortunate that such high profile political murders remain undetected. Benazir Bhutto herself did not carry out proper investigation of the murder of her brother Mir Murtaza Bhutto who was killed by the police in mysterious circumstances when she was the prime minister.

Altaf Hussain appeals to the people of the Punjab
Filed Under Karachi, MQM, Pakistan | Leave a Comment
The leader of MQM Mr. Altaf Hussain has asked the people of the Punjab to try MQM in the coming elections. Mr. Hussain said this in his telephonic address in connection with the election campaign which was relayed in ten cities of the province at a time. He said that MQM was against feudalism and wanted to rid the country of its menace.
I think that MQM should be given credit for starting a new culture in the politics of the country where people from middle class could aspire to become members of parliament and legislative assemblies. It has amply demonstrated this by giving tickets to common people. It is the only party in country whose leader has kept himself away for holding any public office.
MQM has shown keen interest in the development of of the areas from where its members have been elected. Karachi is fast emerging as a new city with rapid investment in infrastructure and other facilities for the common people.

Two Arrested in Banazir Murder case
Filed Under PPP, Pakistan | Leave a Comment
According to reports the team investigating the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto has arrested two people allegedly involved in the killing.
The Additional DIG CID Punjab Choudhry has confirmed the arrests. It is believed that the accused Rafaqat and Hasnain were arrested ten days ago but their arrest has been made public now. Meanwhile the Scotland Yard team which has returned to Pakistan.
I hope that the investigation will lead to proper conclusion and will not meet the same fate as the investigation of other high profile political murders in the country. The government must detect the real people behind the assassination of Ms Benazir Bhutto and try them in a court of law. This will restore the confidence of the people in the performance of the plethora of government agencies which are generally held in contempt by the people. It is time the culture of political killings is eliminated from the country and political differences are settled through dialogue in civilized manner.

The Pakistan People’s Party has released a single page document written and signed by its leader Benazir Bhutto. The document which being described as the Political Will of the deceased leader does not give any information as to the context in which it was written. It praises the officials and members of the party for their dedication, devotion and discipline to the mission of the founding father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
The document says that she would like her husband Asif Ali Zardari to lead the party in the interim period until the party and he decides what is best. It is not clear as to which interim period she is referring to. The document has been signed by her and the date given at the end is October 16th, 2007. It means that it was written just before she arrived in the country.
Her husband Asif Ali Zardari has already staked her claims for the job of prime minister of the country. According to him he is the best man for the job. He said this while giving an interview to the Newsweek and based his claim on this will which in my opinion does not meet the legal requirements.
Newsweek has described him as the ‘controversial widower’ of Benazir Bhutto and I think that the controversy surrounding his person will increase in the coming days. I agree with his contention that he is the widest known person in the party, but his known for his playboy past and his corruptions which twice ended the government of her wife.
The PPP might gain in the coming elections in term of sympathy being generated for the party after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto but this will not be long term and before long there will be visible split in the party.
