America hates Taliban but it has chosen a man to run the affairs of Iraq whose name has full Taliban in it. How can the problems be solved if Taliban is there under their very nose. To create atmosphere of peace and establish the rule of law America should stop ruling through stooges Arrange a fair and impartial pole, hand over the power to the people of Iraq and withdraw.

Longer the stay it will make in Iraq dimmer will get its neutrality as a super power.

Those who were opposition leaders in the previous have by the Grace of Allah and will o the people have been able to form a strong coalition government in the centre and in provinces also their position is not less strong. Stopping of operations in northern areas and Balochistan and solving the problems through dialogue was their slogans.

More than a month has passed but there is status quo at both places. The government should immediately halt operations at both places, release their leaders without loss of time and arrange for withdrawal of army stage wise.

A few days before the new government was to be sworn in the interim government increased the prices of petrol and diesel. At that time it was said that and that prices were increased only to put the new government in trouble.

If the increase in prices were not genuine the new government would have without any opposition brought it to the previous level. It could not do that. It further increased the prices of petrol and diesel resulting into rise of bus and wagon fares to almost double.

Non issue matters and exhausting without any result it would be far better for the new government to get to solve problems of people like Umer Din .It will make them more popular than the act of restoration of PCO judges and hanging any person of the previous Suicide of Umer Din is a great tragedy and to prevent such cases to happen in future it is needed that immediate attention be paid towards providing relief to the poor and the needy. Unemployment of our youth are leading them to go astray and join hand with wrong type of people for earning bare enough to save their life and to show that they are a useful member of their family.

Instead of engaging itself in restoration of PCO judges , unending chain of accountability later to be excused by NROs the government should get to solving lifesaving problems of people . It will add to their popularity and increase their vote banks.

It seems that oil prices will destroy the middle class in our country. The prices have reached a record 117 dollar per barrel and it seems that it will go still higher. Petrol is now becoming a luxury.

The government has increased petrol prices several times during the past two months and it is expected that the petrol prices in the country will be increased again in a few days.

An increase in petrol prices leads to an increase in all other essential items. People are finding it difficult to make both ends meet and if something is not done soon, the government will lose it popularity before long. The new government had promised the people that it will work to bring down the prices. Lets see if the government fulfills its promise.

tariq azizThe Pakistan’s to Afghanistan who had disappeared nearly two months ago while he was going to Kabul by road has appeared on an Arabic TV channel and said that he was in Taliban custody. It is for the first time that something has been known about the missing ambassador.

The ambassador is shown surrounded by armed militants and has appealed to the Pakistani government to accept the demands of the militants to save his life.

Such incidents indicate the state of affairs in the Northern Areas of Pakistan. It is this region of the country where the law of the country does not hold ground and anything can happen. I think that the government should try to secure the release of the ambassador. The government must also introduce reforms in the Northern Areas and bring it under the law of the land. I admire President Musharraf for taking strong actions against the militants who infiltrate here from the neighboring Afghanistan.

Update : The Talibans have demanded the release of 12 people for the setting free the ambassador. The twelve people includes five Taliban militants, the Lal Masjid cleric Abdul Aziz and the people allegedly involved in the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. The fact that the kidnappers have demanded the release of Abdul Aziz clearly establishes his links with militants.

The co-chairman of Pakistan People’s Party Asif Ali Zardari has said that if need be he would become the prime minister. He said this while giving an interview to the BBC Urdu. Asif Zardari has said that he will contest on a National Assembly seat in the coming by-election.

Interestingly the supreme court is hearing a petition challenging the graduation condition which was inserted in the political parties act by President Pervez Musharraf and it enjoys constitutional protection given to it by the Constitution seventeenth amendment.

It is expected that the supreme court will strike down this condition in a few days and Mr. Zardari will be able to contest the election. The date for by-election has already been moved forward without any valid reason. I think that this has been done to facilitate Mr. Zardari.

khaled meshaal Former US president Jimmy Carter has met the Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in the capital of Syria. The meeting took place under tight security and media persons were not allowed to cover the event. The Bush administration and Israel has strongly criticized the meeting. Hamas is regarded as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union. It has carried out attacks against Israeli targets and has vowed to carry out attacks in future as well.

The meeting is very significant as perhaps for the first time and international figure has met the Hamas leader. I think that Mr. Carter has done a right thing by meeting Khaled Meshaal as in my opinion it will help in finding a solution of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Simply branding Hamas as a terrorist organization and refusing any contact with it is not going to do any good. Hamas has mass support and had won the previous elections in the Palestinian Authority. The Government of Hamas was dismissed by President Mahmud Abbas after the donor countries stopped the financial aid and created a financial crisis.

I think that Mr. Carter must use his influence to bring all the parties in the conflict on table and start meaningful dialogues in order to find a solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. If somehow this issue is solved it would bring a healthy change in the region and it will be seen that militancy will also decrease.

According to Reuters Mr. Jimmy Carter has set out a plan for cease fire between Hamas and Israel. The second round of talks would discuss the proposals put forward by Mr. Carter for the cease fire.

Sukkur Jirga has done a marvelous job by ending 23 years old enmity between Jatoi and Mehar tribes . This is perhaps for the first time in the history of any jirga that peace treaty has been reached without involving girls and women . The respectable people of the Jirga deserve all praise .

Involving girls and women does not establish peace , it, on the other hand , adds fuel to the fire of enmity and lives of girls and women are destroyed for no gain at all .

One cannot get rid of hereditary line of thought. All claims of being impartial and fair to all prove to be mere rhetoric and juggling. It is impossible for our rulers to come to power and forget the past. They can change all other policies of their predecessor except the policy of revenge. They will start from where they had left in their previous turn.

The present government will do nothing different. Transfer and posting of police officials on such large scales and favourites finding special posts are clear indications .What is going to happen in Karachi this time no one can imagine because this time those two parties have united whose governments were dismissed on account of extra judicial killings but people involved got scot free. Services of experts are being borrowed. Doctorate in criminology, Shoaib Suddle has arrived; his team is expected to follow soon. God save the people.

A tramp passing through a grave yard, just for time pass, began to read the writings on tomb stones. On one stone, he read, “A lawyer and truthful man.” He was astonished and said to himself,” Very interesting, they have buried two men in one grave.”

What our government is willing to do is somewhat similar in nature. It has appeared in newspapers that government is trying to find out honest police officer for certain places. If it will not be impossible, it will be at least very difficult to find such person in adequate numbers. To make the job easy the government can do one thing. Appoint a police personnel and an honest man together. This will also solve the unemployment problem to some extent.

In an editorial published in the Dawn about the break up of talks between the PPP and the MQM. PPP is largely based in the rural areas of the province and MQM has strongholds in the urban areas. If MQM does not become a part of power sharing formula in the province, it will widen the rural urban divide. The newspaper has asked both the parties to "ensure that the rural urban divide in the province is not deepened, or worse still, exacerbated."

Talks between the two parties failed when MQM said in a press conference that it has decided to sit in the opposition both in the province and at the centre because the PPP was not serious in the talks and the committee formed by the PPP to hold talks with MQM was giving it a cold shoulder.

MQM has also expressed reservation about the appointment of Shoaib Suddle as the Inspector General of Sindh. Shoaib Suddle was the Deputy Inspector General of Sindh when an operation was against and he was accused of carrying out extra judicial killing. Shoaib Suddle was also nominated in the murder of Murtaza Bhutto, the younger brother Benazir Bhutto. It now seems that the officers involved in Murtaza Bhutto murder case are being rewarded.

The newspaper has said that " it is intriguing that the MQM should take a dim view of Dr. Suddle’s appointment as the Sindh police chief when it has actually patronized many police officers who were believed to have been actively involved in the Karachi operation."

I think that the obvious reference is to Choudhry Aslam who was made the head of an elite team to fight gang warfare in the Layari area Karachi.

The National Assembly of Pakistan has passed a resolution asking the government to approach the United Nations for an investigation into the murder of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto on the lines of the investigation made by the international body for the murder to Rafik Hariri, the former primer minister of Lebanon.

The law minister has said that the government will move the Security Council of the United Nations as soon as possible for setting up a panel for identifying the culprits, perpetrators, organizers and financiers behind the heinous crime.

The Pakistan People’s Party has been demanding a UN investigation into the murder of Benazir Bhutto from the very beginning and prime minister Gilani has said in his first speech in the National Assembly that his government will call for a UN investigation to identify the true culprits.

Such high profile political murders in the country have always remained undetected. It will be better for the country if the true people behind the incident are identified and brought to justice by the long arm of the law.

I would like to make one comment on this story. The government must also launch an inquiry into the events after the death of Benazir Bhutto in which extensive damage was done to the public and private property and banks were looted and the province of Sindh remained paralyzed for nearly three days.

According to a news report published the News the splinter group of MQM Haqiqi lead by Amir Khan and Afaq Ahmed will be allowed to resume its political activities soon.

“The government has decided to allow the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi to resume its political activities,” highly reliable sources in the ruling coalition said on condition of anonymity. “The Haqiqi group had been pushed to the wall under the Musharraf regime,” they said.

The report says that the government has decided to review cases against the Haqiqi leaders all those cases will be withdrawn where the involvement could not be proved.

I think that the government intends to withdraw the cases instituted against the Haqiqi leaders under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) which may be made a part of a constitutional package in the coming days to give it protection of the constitution.

The report also says that the Bait-ul-Hamza headquarter will also be rebuilt which was demolished in 2002.

This does not augur well for the province of Sindh, particularly for the people of Karachi. The workers of MQM Haqiqi had been involved in a large number of violent incidents in the city in which many people had lost their lives. The Haqiqi comprised all those elements of the MQM which were purged by the party on various grounds. In 1992 they came to the city when a military operation was launched in the urban areas of Karachi and were responsible for the killing and torture of a large number MQM workers and sympathizers.

The Co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party Mr. Asif Ali Zardari arrived at Nine Zero after talking to Mr. Altaf Hussain the leader of MQM. Mr. was warmly welcomed at Nine Zero by the workers of MQM.

zardari and farooq sattar

Both the parties have a bitter past and hence this move is viewed as very significant by the people. A workable alliance between the People’s Party and the MQM can bring peace and stability in the province of Sindh and its capital Karachi. The people’s party belongs to the rural areas of the province whereas the MQM is mainly concentrated in the urban areas. If the PPP and the MQM move forward this would bridge the rural urban divide in the province.

I have best wishes for the two parties and hope that they foil all conspiracies and bring peace and prosperity for the people whom they seek to represent.

The Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaque Pervez Kayani has given a briefing to the political leadership of the country about the army operation in the Northern Areas of the country. He briefed about the number of troops stationed in various parts of the country and the steps being taken by the Army to fight against terrorism.

Surprisingly this briefing took place in the Prime Minister’s house whereas earlier such briefings used to take place in the Army Headquarters. The General was accompanied by his Director General of Military Operations who has been responsible for the Army operation in the Sawat area.

I think that the political leadership must consolidate power before asserting its authority. The calling of the Army chief in the PM house for a briefing may not go down well with the Army who has a flare for power and considers itself above all institutions in the country.
